Gig Harbor Information 

How Gig Harbor got its name:
In 1841 an exploratory expedition was charting the local waters when strong winds arose forcing the crew in a gig to take refuge in a cove which led into a small bay - a bay which was later to become "Gig" Harbor.

Brief History
The 1841 expedition which gave Gig Harbor its name also discovered a settlement of Native Americans at the bay which they shared with the first white settlers when they started arriving in 1867. Many of the initial settlers were from the former Yugoslavian countries - particularly Croatia - who made their living from fishing and related industries. These activities dominated life in Gig Harbor for many years. Subsequent settlers arrived from Scandinavia and others as veterans from the Civil War. Logging, land development and merchants expanded local industry. In 1946 Gig Harbor was incorporated as a city and today is a pleasant up-market dormitory town of some 6,800 people for Bremerton, Tacoma, Seattle and the Lower Puget Sound.

·         For the past 6 years our High School students have posted the highest test scores of any Pierce County First Class School District. Historically SAT scores are consistently higher than State and national averages. 

·         For the past two years the average 4th and 8th Grade student also placed in the 60th percentile and placed among the highest scores in the county. 

·         On the Washington State 4th Grade assessment, our students were 1st in Pierce County in all subject areas : Math, Listening, Reading and Writing. 

·         55% Of our teachers have Masters Degrees.
